What Are Cavities?

A
cavity is an area of damage or decay on your tooth. When you don’t follow a thorough oral hygiene routine, bacteria sticks to your teeth and creates an acid that eats through your enamel. This is how cavities get started. If you don’t get your cavities treated by a dentist, they will get bigger and can lead to severe tooth decay, infections, and even tooth loss.

Signs of a Cavity

When a cavity first starts to form, you may not notice any symptoms. As it gets bigger, you may experience:

  • Persistent toothache
  • Pain when eating or drinking
  • Increased sensitivity to temperature
  • White spots on your teeth (early stages)
  • Brown or black stains on your teeth (later stages)

If you notice any of these symptoms, call Cape Cod at (508) 255-0557 to schedule an appointment with our friendly team.

Cavity Treatment

The standard treatment for cavities is a dental filling. There are several different types of materials we can use for fillings, including:

  • A tooth-colored composite resin
  • Standard silver amalgam
  • Ceramic or porcelain

In general, our expert dentists will treat your cavity by first removing the decayed sections of your tooth and cleaning out the cavity. Once the cavity is prepared, we will fill it in using one of the materials listed above. After the cavity is filled, we will smooth and polish the filling.

Once the procedure is finished, your tooth will be protected from further decay so long as you maintain a good oral hygiene routine and come back to see us at least twice a year for checkups!
